SORI member Lesley McMillan is offering a PhD studenship on 'Policing Rape in Scotland'. The details of which can be found below.

‘Policing Rape in Scotland’

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD research studentship in the Division of Social Sciences in the School of Law & Social Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University. The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress, and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a £13,900 per annum (normally tax free) contribution to living expenses.

The overall aim of this studentship will be to conduct research in the area of policing rape in Scotland. The research will involve a number of potential methods, and may include a survey of a sample of reported rape cases in Scotland and qualitative interviews with police officers and those who have experienced rape. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake up to a maximum of 6 hours academic activity per week during term time, for example teaching, preparation and marking.

Requirements:
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in Criminology, Sociology or another relevant discipline awarded at an upper second (2:1) level or above, and some knowledge of, and ability to, apply social science research methods. Candidates should have a Masters degree in a relevant discipline, although candidates with a good undergraduate degree in one of these subjects may be considered. Candidates should demonstrate some experience or knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches and an ability to learn new skills.

Applicants are asked to write a research statement of no more than 1000 words outlining how you would approach research on the topic of policing rape in Scotland.

Update 22nd August 2008

We have negotiated a contract for the SORI edited collection with Willan. The book will be delivered to the publishers in April 2009 with publication following shortly after.

Update 28th July 2008

SORI members have been involved in two successful symposium, one at the International Society for Research on Aggression XVIII. World Meeting in Budapest and the other at the XXIX International Congress of Psychology in Berlin. Both were organised by Barbara Krahe and many thanks are due to her for doing such a wonderful job.
